I’ve got a Sony HDR-SR5, and I’m curious about your comment on HD based camcorders being difficult to edit with… I would think it’s easier and faster than going to tape, right?

Thanks, Mike. I’m going to start podcasting soon, most likely audio only (I might mix it up, who knows) about whatever is on my brain here pretty quick. Sadly, I need to get a mic stand. That’s what’s holding me up!

Sorry I’m late to the party. Excellent call ! You probably don’t know this but you’re my Leo replacement since we can’t get his show in the states anymore.

I’ve been a recording engineer wannabe for about 3 decades. Leo’s advice sounded familiar and correct to me. Using a directional/shotgun mic is a good idea. I’m not sure how well it will work if it is strapped to the camera when the camera is pointing at something other than your smiling face. If your off face shots aren’t too far from you it should be better than the omnidirectional approach. It will depend on how directional the mic is.

Part of the fun of recording audio is that you can solve one problem and create another in the process. That’s why I like it so much. I’m kinda sick that way.

Kate — It’s funny you spec those 2 things, because they’re exactly the same models I decided on after the show aired! That’s the camera the guy offscreen has (the one that Leo has him show everyone), and it took me a while to figure out what shotgun mic was mounted on it, but it is the DM-50 (like you quoted!).

I also want the wide angle lense, and maybe a larger battery.

Really, as much as I’d like to use a hard drive based camcorder, they don’t shoot with DV, and don’t have Firewire anymore. That makes things very difficult to edit, so I’ll stick to DV tape for now.

Okay — because I was bored and have a horrible headache, I did some research for you.

If you don’t want to go with a 1300.00 panasonic system that he suggested on there, canon makes some more economical and better (IMHO) HD quality stuff.

It looks to be 100.00 less on the mic, and almost 500.00 less than the panasonic. Just wanted to give you some cheaper (and better) alternatives if you are still in the market. I’m not sure if they have to go with specific camera brands because of product placement or agreement, just throwing out options.

It looks like that will save you even more.

Hey, you should look at used equipment on B&H Photo’s website. They usually have great stuff for great prices. (I’ve bought used cameras from them 3 times and always been happy.)
