So wait: you mean if I set up a speech synthesizer on my Kubuntu laptop, it would speak to me with an inconsistent and unconvincing English(ish) accent?

Oh and you playing with stick figure popsicle sticks never gets old, btw.

Nathan, Linux is actually a type of OS. It is a "Unix-like" OS. Unix was a proprietary product of AT&T, and they controlled who could use it, modify it, or distribute it. Linux was started by Linus Torvalds as an attempt to create a non-proprietary "Unix-like" OS.

Since Linux is Open Source, anyone can modify and distribute it, with certain restrictions, so there are a number of "flavors" of Linux, like Red Hat, Ubuntu, SUSE, all of which use the same basic code, but have customized portions. Except for these customized portions, if you know how to do something in one flavor of Linux, you can probably do it similarly in some other flavor of Linux.

Apple's OS X is also "Unix-like" but is based on Mach, which came from the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) version of Unix.

A "distro" (distribution) is a packaged set of a particular flavor of Unix or Unix-like OSs. OS 9 could be considered a distro, or Ubuntu Hardy Heron, or Fedora Core 6. If Windows was a Unix-like OS, you could consider Windows XP SP2 to be a distro.

More than this, I'm sure you don't want to know.

Shawn,

You're just casting more "wah-wah-wah" "wah-wah-wah-wah-wah" at me. Really honey, It's not you, it's me.

I thought Linux was a Brand.

But really, I doubt you can pound any understanding into my pointy little head.

Distribution = Brand of Linux, much like Coast is the soap I like, Ubuntu is the Linux I like. Ivory is OK, but I prefer the smell of Coast. Same concept.

You may have gotten just as much out of the video as a full fledge geek though -- there should be rules against shooting video at 3AM. :)

I'm amused, but to be honest I understood as much of that as I would a Japanese Anime cartoon...maybe less.

What's a distribution?
