I don't know if they have a thing like this in the US, but here in Canada we have a Child Tax Benefit or more commonly called "Baby Bonus". This is a tax-free monthly payment made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under age 18. Then, fairly recently the gov't came up with this idea - Universal Child Care Benefit or as I call it "The child-free people get screwed". The Canada Revenue Agency (our version of the IRS) says this on their website "The UCCB is designed to help Canadian families, as they try to balance work and family life, by supporting their child care choices through direct financial support. The UCCB is for children under the age of 6 years and is paid in instalments of $100 per month per child." Now, I don't think my taxes should go to help cover day care costs for couples who both work. They made their decision to have kids and I made mine not to. Now, I'm paying them and I'm getting nothing. How is that fair? I want my money in the form of a tax write off. Am I being unreasonable? Why do I get effed over because I don't have children?
