Silly Things I Do #3

I like to wear mismatched socks. I think I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s true. I prefer similar thicknesses, but I’m not terribly picky. It’s important that they are drastically different, however. Something like one purple and one green is perfect. Or one white tube sock, and one argyle dress sock.

So, do mismatch socks annoy you, or make you feel unique?

  1. Nope, sorry. I have picky feet, so tend to buy in bulk when I can find thick black cotton socks, since I don’t know when I’ll find them again.

So not only are they the same, they all tend to be the same dye lot.

Pretty much the opposite of you. 🙂

  2. If I were to mismatch socks, it would have to be one black and one white. I only have the 2 colors/types. Every year or 2 I retire the old socks of one type, and get about 10 new pairs of the same sock. I also stage the socks, by putting clean ones in the back of the drawer and moving the unworn ones to the front. White on the left, black on the right, so unmatched socks don’t really happen to me.

Some people might call that OCD, but really, it’s a good system.

  3. Tom, your method appeals to me on a “easy to find socks” level — but we have a huge wicker basket affectionately known as The Sock Basket which houses a large quantity of post wash, pre mate socks.

My wife usually gets frustrated with our lack of sock folding willingness, and will match up a whole slew of them. For the next week or so, I’ll wear nicely mated, matching socks out of the drawer.

Perhaps I’ve convinced myself I like mismatch socks simply because I abhor mating them? I guess I’m OK with that. 😉

  4. Mismatched socks make me smile — it was one of the first things I noticed about my (now) boyfriend when I first met him.

Oh — AND, his mom gave me a purposefully mismatched pair of socks for Christmas. (Same color scheme — different patterns.) They are very, very fuzzy — almost to a fault. (They shed neon fuzz EVERYWHERE!)
