Fire and Smoke, Awesome Edition

Yesterday I blogged about my day of awesome. There was one little thing I left out — the family bought me a combination early Father’s Day and birthday gift in the form of an awesome grill!

If you think an awesome grill would have propane fire, quite frankly you don’t know the awesomeness that is charcoal. Here you can see me with my ninja cooking utensils and my chimney starter full of burning briquettes. (If you don’t have a chimney starter, go buy one. You’ll be thankful you did.)

Just out of frame is a bowl of soaking hickory chips. I debated whether to use hickory or mesquite, but since it’s the beginning of summer, I figure I can alternate all year. Because really there’s no wrong answer. Mmmmmm…

I hope your weekend is half as good as mine. I’d wish it to be as awesome, but I fear you might explode. 🙂

  1. I agree with you on the awesomeness of charcoal and real flames and smoke and stuff. Enjoy.

But you may want to consider. Is it possible you have something that was saved from the other much less awesome fire and smoke that the women in your family might wish had not been saved?

    Just asking.

  2. No silly, that’s a new shirt. All that survived the fire was a button up shirt and tie. (We were at church)

The odd splotches were sweat. It’s hot, and I was standing near a fire. Plus I’m horribly out of shape. 🙂

  3. A Webber Smokie (it looks like). Got one meself. Also fired up Mom’s on Saturday to do chicken (on the bone), hamburgers and hotdogs. With charcoal, you gotta know your fire, and know that the fire is dynamic. Adds that skill level that makes grilling so much fun.

Say, did I ever mention that grilling is a full contact sport with my family?

  4. Charcoal? Are you from noojersey? Atstuffaintright. Gotta have Mesquite. It’s ok to throw in a little Oak, as an extender, but grilling without Mesquite is just wrong. If you don’t have a grill made from a 55 gallon oil drum (turned sideways) the second best way to grill with Mesquite is a pot bellied Weber. I have both so I can conserve my supply of well seasoned Mesquite by using the Weber for smaller jobs.

  5. I use propane/gas, but charcoal really does seem to add great flavor to a steak (or anything on the grill). I grilled some steaks at my Dad’s house a while back with mesquite charcoal and the steaks were insane good!

I used to have a small Weber grill 10 years back when I lived in an apartment. Surprisingly, somebody stole it off my porch. It was very dirty and you can usually find one for less than $20 at Wal-mart or Target. I guess somebody needed it more then me! LOL!

Now I have this super huge gas grill. I could probably cook 20 steaks at once on it. All I really need is a little grill anyway.

  6. My facebook status from last night:

“Grillin’ some monster T-Bones. Over charcoal, BTW. Just as God intended.”

Glad to know you’re on the right side of this issue! 😛
